Turn-key Molas B300 Wind LiDAR System Passed The Performance Test in Victoria, Australia

The performance test for Molas B300 wind LiDAR system has been done between end of June to End of September near Geelong, Victoria, Australia together with our customer who recently purchased the system after the test. Molas B300 has shown extremely good correlation with the Met-mast and high availability in all heights even if the winter weather in Victoria brought slightly negative impact on the wind LiDAR data availability.

The power supply system was also under operation without interruption during the whole testing period, and its SCADA system enables us and our customer to monitor not only how it is working now, but also how it performed everyday in its operation history. At this same time, this data also gives a very good reference to optimize the system for different site conditions.

The test was performed at one of Westwind sites located in Victoria. The test site is generally flat, and consists one 100m Meteorologic mast and 1 unit of SoDAR. The LiDAR was installed about 280m North of the Met-mast and close to the SoDAR.

Data Availability of Molas B300 Wind Monitoring LiDAR System

The availability parameter of the Molas B300 wind lidar has to give a value equal to or greater than 80% & 90% for each valid 10 minute period. This parameter indicates how many samples in a 10-min period have passed a pre-defined threshold value of the signal strength (i.e. CNR: Carrier to Noise Ratio). Molas B300 LiDAR automatically filters out the data when it’s less than 80%.

During the test period, the Molas B300 LiDAR is set to measure the following heights: 40m, 50m, 60m, 80m, 90m, 100m, 120m, 140m, 150m, 160m, 180m and 200m. Please find the following tables for availability respectively.

Power Supply System Performance for Molas B300 LiDAR System

During the test from 20th June and 26th September, power supply system to Molas B300 is under operation continuously without any breakdowns, so its availability is in this period is 100%.

Minimum generation per day: 0.80 kWh @ 3th July

Maximum generation per day: 2.64kWh @ 4th July

Lowest battery voltage: 24.91V @ 8am 4th July

Minimum generation per day: 0.97 kWh @ 26th July

Maximum generation per day: 2.1kWh @ 24th July

Power System Performance Summary

It is shown that the system has excellent stability without breaking down during the whole testing period.

 

During the test, the solar battery system produces and stores sufficient power to support continuous operation of LiDAR. In most days, the batteries are charged before 12pm during the day, which indicates there should be more room to optimize the size of the solar panels.

 

Considering the testing period is during the winter and in Victoria, which represent the worst-case scenario in terms of solar resource during time of year and geographic location within Australia continent. So it is proven that the designed capacity for both solar and battery can handle any location and time in the country.
